The Afghan economy experienced a "catastrophic collapse" after the Taliban came to power, and in less than a year everything that was built for ten years has been cancelled, according to a UN report.

And before the Taliban took power in the country last August, the Afghan economy was very small, with a GDP of about $20 billion, but "in just one year, about five billion dollars were lost," Kani Vignaraya, director of the UNDP, told Asia and the Pacific.

"Nowhere else in the world have we seen such a dramatic collapse," she added.

The price of the basic food basket has increased by 2021 percent since August 35, Afghans allocate 60 to 70 percent of their income for it.

Vignaraja indicated that now 95 to 97 percent of the population lives below the poverty line, compared to just over 70 percent a year ago.

In Afghanistan, the banking and financial system is also collapsing – as many as 700 jobs have been lost, most of which are women...every fifth child is at risk of severe malnutrition.

The collapse of the legal economy has led to an increase in the share of the illegal economy, which accounts for 12 to 18 percent of GDP. A year ago, its share in GDP was nine to 14 percent.

Abdallah Al Dardari, the UNDP representative in Afghanistan, said that humanitarian aid will not be enough to improve the situation because in 14 months the number of people in need of aid has increased from 19 to 22 million.

He said that it is planned to create two million jobs in the next three years, through projects to support the private sector, work with local communities, focus on women entrepreneurs, as well as through the renewal of local agricultural infrastructure and microfinance and banking institutions.
