There are several types of mold, such as Stachybotrys and Chaetomiun - poisonous black molds that are harmful to health. But according to mold expert Michael Rubino, more dangerous than them is t. n. common mold - Aspergillus.

"Aspergillus is one of the main species that occupy a large percentage of space. Many people who suffer from the harmful effects of mold have this type in their homes. I call Aspergillus "cactus mold" because it has the ability to grow and survive with very little water, it does not need a catastrophic event when the walls and floor are soaked with water. "Spores of this kind easily form colonies."

Why is it so harmful?

"Aspergillus has the ability to produce microscopic toxins. n. mycotoxins. When the mold feels threatened, it begins to produce small toxins along with more mold spores. "Then these tiny poisonous particles, mycotoxins, not only reduce the quality of indoor air, but also negatively affect the health of the people who inhale them."

Everyone reacts differently to mold exposure. These include genetics, length of exposure, concentration of airborne particles, previous health… One person may not experience any symptoms, while another may have serious reactions.
People with weakened immune systems are particularly prone to developing symptoms. Their immune system is unable to rid the body of mold spores, mold particles and toxins.

How to spot this mold in your home?

"One of the main problems with Aspergillus is his ability to remain undetected in the home. This is mainly because it has a lighter color. "Over 180 species of Aspergillus have been identified so far and come in a variety of colors, but many are greenish-yellow."

"Unlike black or brown mold, which looks like a coffee stain and is easy to spot, the muted color of this species often blends in well with the environment. "This means that Aspergillus can scream long before it is discovered."

Where does it most often appear?

"Like all types of mold, Aspergillus requires moisture, which means it thrives in all humid areas inside the home where condensation can occur. These can be ceilings and basements, but also windows, window sills. It can also occur after water has penetrated indoors.

Rubino advises carefully inspecting every corner of the house.

"Look carefully at all the rooms because, as I said, Aspergillus often has a very light color, although it can also be brown or gray. The lamp is a great help, because you can use it to illuminate hard-to-reach places. In addition, be sure to lean on your nose. "The presence of mold often creates a moldy, earthy, rotten and damp odor in the air."

"If you smell moisture, or notice visible mold, or see water stains, coffee-like discoloration, or dirty surfaces that may indicate mold, I recommend calling an expert as soon as possible," Rubino advises.
