The epidemiological situation in Germany is dramatic. What will it mean to enter the country? Who must be quarantined? Where can one travel inside Germany? DW provides answers to the most important questions.

Despite the current dramatic epidemiological situation, the rules for entering Germany are partly milder than they were a year ago. However, as the number of newly infected people with the coronavirus grows, as of November 9, all those over the age of 12 entering Germany, regardless of where and by what means of transport, are required to show adequate certificates.

So, anyone who wants to enter Germany in any case must have with them a certificate that he has been vaccinated, that he has passed the virus or a negative corona test. That decree is valid until January 15, 2022. In general, entry is possible from all EU member states, as well as from countries belonging to the Schengen area - Iceland, Switzerland and Liechtenstein.

Before traveling to Germany, inquire about the current situation and rules. Detailed information can be found on the website of the German Embassy in Northern Macedonia, on the pages of the German Ministry of Health and the Ministries of internal и foreign affairs.

Traveling from third countries?

Entry into Germany from third countries, such as Northern Macedonia, is possible, but with certain restrictions. Currently, 20 countries are on the so-called. positive list of German authorities, including Australia, Canada and South Korea. Residents of those countries in Germany can enter with the required certificates, regardless of the purpose of their trip.
Travelers from other countries, in order to enter Germany, must be fully vaccinated and have a good reason why their trip is absolutely necessary. The website of the Ministry of Interior states in which cases the trip is considered absolutely necessary.

As for vaccines, only those approved by the German Paul Ehrlich Institute, and these are the Bayontek / Pfizer, AstraZeneka and Johnson & Johnson vaccines. Complete vaccination is considered after the second week of receiving the second dose of vaccine. For those who have contracted the virus, one dose of vaccine is sufficient.

Who can not travel to Germany?

Hence, citizens of third countries who are not on the positive list, who have not been fully vaccinated and who cannot give a good reason why travel is absolutely necessary cannot enter Germany.

Is quarantine necessary?

In general, quarantine is mandatory for anyone who, upon arrival in Germany, has no proof that they have been vaccinated, that they have contracted the virus or a negative corona test. Isolation is also mandatory for travelers coming from high-risk countries or areas with variants of the virus.

For those coming from high-risk countries, a ten-day quarantine is mandatory, which can be shortened to five days if the test is negative. The list of high-risk countries of the Robert Koch Institute includes some EU member states such as Austria, Belgium, Greece or Croatia, but also the countries of the Western Balkans such as Northern Macedonia. The quarantine is also mandatory for German travelers returning to the country - if they are not fully vaccinated or have not contracted the virus. Travelers coming to Germany from high-risk countries are required to register their arrival in advance filling out a digital form.

Do I have to be tested before the trip?

Not necessary. If you have proof of complete vaccination or proof that you have contracted the virus, you do not have to be tested before entering Germany. However, such confirmation may be requested by the airline or railway company you are traveling with. You should ask them about it before the road. Only PCR tests (not older than 72 hours) and antigen tests (not older than 48 hours) are recognized in Germany.

What rules apply to children?

Under the same conditions, children are allowed to enter Germany. Children under the age of 12 are not required to submit the above certificates. In addition, a five-day quarantine is mandatory for them if they come from a high-risk area. But they also have to fill out a digital entry form in Germany.

Can I move freely in Germany?

In principle yes, but given the coronary measures the rules may vary from province to province, and you may not be able to travel to any province. Until December 12, tourist trips to Saxony are banned. It is similar in parts of Bavaria. Therefore, before you travel, ask yourself if tourist trips are allowed in the province you are coming to.

Can I go to the cinema, museum or restaurants as a tourist in Germany?

Here, too, the rules vary from province to province, and even from region to region. In many states, such as Berlin, Hamburg, Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia, the so-called rule "2G". This specifically means that only vaccinated and vaccinated people can laugh in restaurants, museums or at various events. A negative test is not enough. Hence, for travelers who are not vaccinated, the tourist offer is limited. In the coming period, restrictive measures could be tightened, and the "2G" rule is already required to be introduced throughout the country.

What should I do if I become infected with covidium19?

Go to quarantine immediately and inform the health authorities. Here you can contact the competent services. If the symptoms are severe, call a doctor or call the hotline 116 117. In an emergency, call 112 or go to the hospital.
