Who started first? Where did the idea to follow fashion come from
The concept of fashion is very broad. It can be seen from a sociological, psychological, aesthetic, economic, marketing, political and design point of view. Each of these views reveals something about fashion, but the definition of the term is constantly slipping away.
Fashion is a living concept that changes and adapts to the time in which it finds itself, while at the same time dictating and shaping the given time.

The origin of fashion
It is believed that the word fashion was first used in ancient Rome. Namely, the Romans imposed their way of dressing or wearing hairstyles and jewelry to all the peoples they ruled; they thus created the measure by which man should look in the great Roman Empire. The word regime, from which today's notion of fashion derives, can be translated precisely as a measure, manner or rhythm.

On the other hand, fashion appears much later; although it implies clothing, it does not come down to it, but transcends it. It was necessary for human consciousness to develop to a level where it did not want to be covered or protected by clothing, but to speak of its identity through clothing.

Clothes exist as much as man himself. The first and basic function of clothing would be to protect the body from external influences, primarily weather conditions, but also from influences that are not related to weather conditions (example: wearing a radiation suit). From a Christian perspective, dressing is the first act of man after eating an apple from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Shame, then, is, according to Christianity, the cause of clothing.

The paradox of fashion: between mass and personal identity
Appearance is what is first noticed in man. That is why people use their way of dressing to say something about themselves without a single word. This was the case in ancient Egypt, where slaves at first glance differed from the pharaohs in dress and wigs.
This is also the case in modern society, where differences in clothing are seen not only in class divisions but also in different styles of dress. Clothing is undoubtedly a form of non-verbal communication.

Changes in fashion
Fashion shows and fashion magazines are the most effective means for fashion houses to showcase their products to the public. Fashion shows are held for the spring / summer and autumn / winter seasons; the creations change every year. Oscar Wilde considered fashion to be an expression of so much artistic ugliness that it had to change every six months.

What actually makes fashion constantly changing? The answer would be the goal of capitalism - profit; if fashion did not change, a man would need only a few costumes for life. Of course, the answer lies not only in profit, but also in the psyche of the man who is changeable and who wants to express himself through clothes.

Frequent changes in fashion make various styles quickly become obsolete, but that does not mean they are disappearing. Style can last much longer than fashion and that is why we believe that someone who has style has character, personality. So, we can have people who do not follow fashion (stick to a certain style), people who are in step with fashion, as well as those people (of course, the rarest case) who dress before fashion, ie. before its time.

Fashion is of great importance for man because it helps us to understand the nature of the time we are in at the moment, it allows us to understand and express ourselves. It progresses and regresses, together with humanity, so that it is a kind of mirror of history and the present, and even the future of the human race.
