The Economist Intelligence Unit has published its annual list of the best cities living in the world, and it shows some noticeable differences from the previous year, reports "CNN".

173 cities around the world were ranked according to various factors, including health care, crime rate, political stability, infrastructure and green spaces.

Big winners

Overall, this year Europe dominates the list, with six places in the top 11 (one place is shared by two cities). Copenhagen, which was declared the capital of Europe by CNN Travel in December 2021, won second place. Switzerland is the only country in Europe that has two cities in the top 10, with Geneva in sixth place and Zurich in third. However, the overall winner is Canada with three cities on the list - Calgary, Vancouver and Toronto.

Worst cities to live in

Last year's winner, Auckland, dropped out of the top 10 in 2022 and found a surprising 34th place. The most noticeable decline in the ranking this year was Australia. Despite being at the top of the list in the past, Melbourne dropped to 10th place in 2022. In 2021, Australia dominated the list, with Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth joining Melbourne in the top 10. This year they are ranked 27th, 30th and 32nd, respectively.

Wellington, the capital of New Zealand, was in fourth place in 2021, but also dropped out of the top 10 this year. Although Europe was ranked very well in 2022, two important cities are still missing - London and Paris. However, rising living costs have probably played an important role in the ranking of the two capitals, as well as Britain's decision to leave the European Union. The ongoing global conflict was the number one factor in determining which countries ranked at the bottom of the list. Damascus, Lagos and Tripoli were rated as the worst cities to live in the world. And Kyiv has not been analyzed at all this year because of the ongoing war in Ukraine.

The most expensive cities in the world

Earlier this month, global mobility company EKA announced its list of the most expensive cities to live in the world. Hong Kong had the "honor" to be in first place, and the top five places are occupied by New York, Geneva, London and Tokyo. The only city that appeared on both lists is Geneva. The ranking of the most expensive cities was determined solely by economic factors - average rent, gas price, etc. - unlike the other list, which looks at the city's cultural attractions such as museums and concerts, as well as infrastructure such as mass transit.
