Klose: The new Omicron strain is probably introduced in Germany as well
The Minister of State for Social Affairs and Integration in the West German state of Hesse, Kai Klose, warned today that the new Omicron strain "is very likely to have already arrived" in Germany as mutations typical of this variant were detected in a traveler returning from South Africa.
"Last night, several mutations typical of the omicron strain were detected in a passenger returning from South Africa." Klose wrote on Twitter.
The passenger is isolated at home. If confirmed, this would be the first case of omicron in Germany.
No other details were released about the passenger or which airport he arrived at.
Frankfurt International Airport, Germany's busiest airport, is located in the state of Hesse.
"If you came back from South Africa last week, then limit your contacts and get tested." warned Kloss.
The first case of the omicron strain in Europe was confirmed yesterday in Belgium.
