Taliban local authorities in the southern Afghan province of Helmand have issued a ban on beard shaving, local media reported.

Taliban director of culture and information Hafiz Rashed Helmand told the daily Etilalatroz that the decision was made by Taliban religious police during a meeting with barber shop owners in the southern province.

The official letter from the Taliban authorities circulated on social media, in which the Taliban provincial acting officials warned the barbers that they would suffer consequences if someone shaved their beard.

A Taliban spokesman did not immediately return calls for comment.

Last month, the Taliban ousted an internationally backed Afghan government. The regime has since imposed gender segregation on colleges and barred women from working. In addition, girls are only allowed to go to school until the 6th grade.

Afghans and governments around the world are watching to see if the Taliban will be more moderate this time around, although so far there have been no announcements.
