There will not be enough pork on German tables
Experts fear that after the energy crisis Germany will slip into the food sector and that in the future meat will come from Spain. Germany, one of the world's most important exporters of pork, is suffering huge losses in this sector and the question is how long it will be able to maintain this position.
By mid-November, 8,4 percent fewer pigs were slaughtered, and the decreasing trend continues, reports the "Agrarhoit" portal.
Dirk Kockler, of agriculture trade group Agrivis, said the market was preparing for a fall to around 550.000 slaughters a week, down 250.000 from previously. Between 2010 and 2020, that number reached more than one million per week. According to reports, the drop of about half a million slaughters will cut production in half within a few years.
Many farmers in Germany have recently given up the business, some are over-indebted, others see no future for German pig farming due to rising production costs, warned Hubert Kelliger, board member of the Meat Industry Association. Therefore, meat will become a scarce commodity, and there will be no domestic products on store shelves, he commented.
Germany, however, is not the only country whose farmers are suffering the consequences of the crisis. In almost all EU member states, there is a decline in livestock, reported Politika rs.
