China today called on US President Joe Biden not to "underestimate its firm determination to protect its sovereignty", addressing him directly because he had earlier promised in Tokyo today that he would use force in the event of a Chinese invasion of Taiwan. On the other hand, Taipei did not hide his admiration for Biden's statement.

Biden said in Tokyo that the United States would defend Taiwan militarily in the event of Beijing invading the autonomous island, warning that China was "flirting with danger" with its military maneuvers and would defend Taiwan from a possible Chinese attack.

"We urge the United States to immediately refrain from sending negative signals to the pro-Taiwanese forces," said Wang Wenbin, a spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

Taipei, meanwhile, welcomed Biden's message that Washington would militarily defend Taiwan in the event of Beijing invading the island, which China considers part of its territory.

The Taiwanese Foreign Ministry thanked Biden for reaffirming his commitment to the country, adding that the government would continue to strengthen its defenses and deepen cooperation with countries such as the United States and Japan to maintain security.
