China will launch a campaign to promote the Mandarin language, with the goal of using 2025 percent of the population by 85, officials said today.

According to foreign agencies, the goal is for the Mandarin language to become almost universal in all of China by 2035.

This campaign could further threaten the regional dialects of Cantonese and Hawaiian, as well as the languages of some minorities - Tibetan, Mongolian and Uighur.

A State Council statement said the Mandarin language was "unbalanced and inadequate" and needed to be improved to meet the demands of the modern economy.

Critics say minority languages and cultures are endangered and the aim is to eradicate cultures that are not in line with the dominant Hahn ethnic group.
