China continues military exercises around Taiwan
China's military has announced new military exercises in the seas and airspace around Taiwan, a day after the scheduled end of its largest exercises to date in protest against last week's visit to the island by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Reuters.
China has said it will conduct drills focused on anti-submarine operations and naval attacks – confirming fears by some security analysts and diplomats that Beijing will continue to pressure Taiwan's defenses.
Taiwan's foreign ministry condemned the move, saying China, which claims the self-governing island as its own, was deliberately creating crises. It asked Beijing to stop its military actions.
"In the face of military intimidation created by China, Taiwan will not be afraid to back down and will more firmly defend its sovereignty, national security and free and democratic way of life," the ministry said in a statement.
US President Joe Biden, in his first public comments on Taiwan since Pelosi's visit, said he was not concerned about Taiwan, but rather about China's activities in the region.
"I'm concerned that they're moving as far as they are," Biden told reporters in Delaware. "But I don't think they're going to do any more than they are."
