Ukraine has condemned Russian plans to hold presidential elections in the occupied territory next spring, declaring them "null and void", the Guardian reports.

"We call on the international community to firmly condemn Russia's intention to hold presidential elections in the occupied Ukrainian territories and to impose sanctions on those involved in their organization and implementation," the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said.

The ministry also warned countries against sending observers to "pseudo-elections", saying violators would "face criminal responsibility".
