KFOR has increased its presence and patrolling on the Kosovo-Serbia border
The international military mission in Kosovo, KFOR, has increased its presence and patrolling in northern Kosovo, at the border crossings with Serbia, Jarinje and Brnjak, in order to strengthen awareness of the situation.
In a written response from KFOR's public relations office, sent to the Serbian-language portal "Kosovo Online", it is stated that the measures were taken in order to enable KFOR to respond quickly to all security challenges.
- We want to assure everyone that KFOR is ready to intervene if necessary, says the answer to the portal's question on the occasion of the significant increase in the presence of KFOR at the border and the arrival of two jeeps of the Kosovo Security Forces at the Jarinje crossing.
KFOR also notes that its mandate, stemming from United Nations Security Council Resolution 1244, is to ensure a safe and secure environment and freedom of movement for all people in Kosovo.
- In order to carry out its tasks, KFOR maintains a visible and mobile position on the ground, states the press service of the mission.
The activity of KFOR on the Kosovo-Serbia border takes place on the eve of September 1, when the decisions of the Kosovo authorities to replace Serbian with Kosovo license plates and for reciprocity with Serbia in terms of travel documents upon entry of citizens from one in the other country.
The decisions were supposed to start being implemented on August 1, but the Government of Albin Kurti, at the request of Western diplomats, primarily the American ambassador in Pristina, Jeff Hovenier, postponed them for a month, after on July 31 by the Kosovo Serbs protests and roadblocks were organized near the border with Serbia.
