Israeli forces stepped up attacks on Gaza today and fierce fighting is taking place in Jabalia in the north, while tanks are advancing deeper into Rafah in the south.

Medics said at least five Palestinians were killed when houses were hit in Jabalia, and others are believed to be under rubble. That area cannot be reached because of the bombing, the agencies report.

Israeli attacks on the northern and southern Gaza Strip this month have displaced hundreds of thousands of Palestinians and cut off major aid access routes, leading to fears of starvation.

Residents of Jabalia said tanks destroyed the local market and bulldozers demolished shops and houses.

Hamas's military wing said its fighters attacked three tanks there.
