Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen today criticized women's rights organization UN Women for taking 57 days to condemn Hamas attacks on Israel and sexual violence during the attacks.

Cohen also called for UN Women Executive Director Sima Bachus to resign.

– The behavior of UN Women after the massacre on October 7 was shameful. Their announcement was lukewarm and late after almost two months of silence and turning a blind eye to the war crimes, crimes against humanity and sexual crimes committed by the terrorist organization Hamas, the head of Israeli diplomacy said.

UN Women issued a statement condemning Hamas 57 days after more than 1.200 people, mostly civilians, were killed and around 240 kidnapped in attacks by Palestinian extremists led by the Islamic group, which rules the Gaza Strip.

UN Women has been criticized for weeks for keeping silent on evidence of sexual violence during the attack, Israeli media reported.

The statement issued today first expressed regret that the conflicts between Israel and Hamas have resumed after a week-long truce.

- We unequivocally condemn the brutal attacks by Hamas on Israel on October 7. We are alarmed by the numerous reports of gender-based crimes and sexual violence during those attacks, the statement added.

The organization commends the UN Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territories, including East Jerusalem, for calling for reports on gender-based crimes since October 7.

Cohen condemned the decision, saying the investigation into the crimes should be led by a neutral body, "not Israel-haters and anti-Semites." j
