The former president of Brazil, the leftist Luis Ignacio Lula da Silva, won 51 percent of the vote and incumbent head of state, right-winger Jair Bolsonaro, 37 percent, Brazil's Supreme Electoral Court, Brazil's highest electoral body, announced, based on just 0,1 percent of votes counted after today's general election.

If none of the candidates wins more than 50 percent of the vote, the two candidates with the most votes will participate in the second round of voting on October 30, reports Reuters.

More than 150 million Brazilian citizens went to the polls today to elect a new president, senators, councilors and state governors.

The focus is on the presidential elections, and according to public opinion polls, a convincing victory of Da Silva is expected.

According to the survey, he should win 48,3 percent of the vote, and Bolsonaro 36,3 percent.

Bolsonaro voted in Rio de Janeiro and said he expected to win the election in the first round, despite polls giving him a slim chance.

11 candidates participated in the presidential elections.

Brazilian citizens also elected all 513 members of the Lower House of Congress, a third of the 81 members of the Senate, state governors and councilors.

Although Lula da Silva leads the presidential race, the conservative coalition supporting Bolsonaro is expected to have a majority in both houses of Congress.
