The UN Security Council held an emergency meeting last night to discuss the situation in Gaza, with several members expressing concern over the situation despite a ceasefire between Islamic Jihad militants and Israel following three days of deadly clashes.

The UN representative for the Middle East, Thor Venesland, through a video link before the beginning of the meeting, warned that "the truce is fragile", and that the continuation of hostilities will have "disastrous" consequences.

Russian Ambassador Vasil Nebenzia stressed that the Council is "deeply concerned by this development of events, which could lead to a full military conflict and further deterioration of the already difficult humanitarian situation in Gaza".

Israel launched an intense attack on Islamic Jihad positions in Gaza on Friday, to which the militants responded by firing more than XNUMX rockets in retaliation, according to the Israeli military.

It is the worst conflict in Gaza since last year's 11-day war.

A truce brokered by Egypt on Sunday ended intense clashes that killed 44 people and wounded 360 in the enclave, according to Gaza's health ministry.
