Iceland is the first NATO country to ratify the membership of Finland and Sweden in the Alliance – the Icelandic parliament gave its consent in advance in June, Finnish public service portal Ile reported.

After the Icelandic president Gudni Torlacius Johannesson signed today, the ratification documents were sent to the US State Department.

The decision to ratify the protocol of the North Atlantic Treaty on the accession of Finland and Sweden should be taken today by the Estonian Parliament.

Permanent representatives of NATO member states signed the accession protocol in Brussels, and after signing, the members of the Alliance must ratify the protocol in accordance with their legislation.
