Brooklyn Nets basketball player Kyrie Irving said today that his decision not to get vaccinated against the coronavirus cost him $100 million because he had to turn down the new contract the Nets offered him at the beginning of last season.

Last season, Irving was unable to play for Brooklyn in home games until March due to a decision by New York City officials to ban unvaccinated people indoors. Irving played away from Brooklyn depending on the vaccination rules of other US cities.

- I gave up a four-year contract worth 100 million because of the decision not to get vaccinated. I could sign the contract, get vaccinated or remain unvaccinated, which introduced uncertainty about whether I would stay in the NBA, whether I would stay in Brooklyn and face possible challenges due to the possible loss of work due to my decision - said Irving.

The new season in the NBA league starts on October 18, and the teams started preparations from today. Kyrie Irving will play for Brooklyn and will collect $36,5 million for the upcoming season. If he does not sign a new contract, he will become a free agent at the end of the season.
