Indian forces mistakenly killed at least 14 civilians in the northeastern state of Nagaland, local officials said.

Indian Interior Minister Amit Shah said he was upset by the news of civilians being killed in the shooting late last night.

"The state government will thoroughly investigate this incident to ensure justice for the bereaved families," Shah wrote on Twitter.

Local media reported that Indian security forces mistakenly opened fire on civilians, and the exact number of casualties is unknown. It is not clear what led to the incident in that federal state bordering Myanmar, writes Reuters.
