Albanian President Ilir Meta welcomes Bulgaria's proposal to separate the accession process of Albania and Northern Macedonia to the EU, which will allow Albania to progress, writes the Albanian portal Exit.

Due to the package in which the two countries are, Albania failed to start negotiations, primarily due to the veto from Bulgaria for S. Macedonia, despite receiving the green light from all 27 member states.

Last week, Bulgarian Ambassador to the EU Rumen Alexandrov said his country would not lift the veto on northern Macedonia, but that Albania should be segregated and assessed independently. He added that Bulgaria had made several proposals on how northern Macedonia could alleviate the situation, including the implementation of the Friendship Agreement signed between the two countries.

Albanian President Meta reacted to Bulgaria's proposal, saying today:

"I welcome the position of Bulgaria, which proposes the start of negotiations for Albania's membership in the European Union as soon as possible."

Meta added that he was convinced that Northern Macedonia had made "enormous progress in implementing reforms and reaching historic agreements like the one in Prespa".

"I welcome the dignified attitude of the Macedonian authorities to continue unwavering in the pro-European course of reforms that serve the citizens and the aspiration for EU membership," the Albanian president said.
