Future Bulgarian Prime Minister Petkov under investigation: He had dual citizenship, but did not apply
The deadline for checking the citizenship of former interim Economy Minister Kiril Petkov has been extended until mid-December. It all started in late August, after the prosecution was notified by email that he had both Bulgarian and Canadian citizenship.
The prosecution said the investigation against Petkov lasted almost a month after the formation of the government and a day after the Constitutional Court announced that the co-chair of "Continue the Change", also known as the future prime minister, had dual citizenship on May 10 when he was appointed by presidential decree. for Minister. However, he stated that he has only Bulgarian citizenship, which, according to the lawyers, means that he signed a document with incorrect content.
The prosecution informed that all documents related to the case will be requested from the Constitutional Court. The process is ongoing.
Special Prosecutor's Office spokesman Hristo Krastev told Bulgarian National Radio that the extension was possible and that documents should be awaited from the Anti-Corruption Commission, to which - as interim minister, Petkov was obliged to submit a statement of incompatibility.
After that date, the supervising prosecutor will have another month to say - whether or not there is evidence of a crime committed by Petkov, said Krastev.
An answer to the same question regarding the Chief Prosecutor Ivan Geshev is expected today. A signal against him - again in the special prosecutor's office, filed by the acting Minister of Interior Boyko Rashkov - for illegal detection of special intelligence means. The investigation is over, said prosecutor Krastev, but how - will be clear during the day.
