Croatian scientists have published extremely important results from the research on the disease covid-19, which provide insight into long-term protection from it, writes "Dnevnik.hr".

The scientific journal Vaccines, one of the journals of the American Association of Virologists, published the results of a study by scientists from the Croatian Special Hospital "St. Katarina "(authors: Primorac D., Brlek P., Matisic V., Molnar V., Vrdoljak K., Zadro R.) and the German University Hospital in Bonn (author: Parchment M.), in which they analyzed the longevity and effectiveness of cellular immunity in a population of 200 respondents.

A study by Croatian scientists has shown that cellular immunity is the key to long-term protection against covid-19, and the results of the study were published in the scientific journal Vaccines, of the American Association of Virologists.

One of the authors of the research, prof. Dr. Dragan Primorac points out that with this research "it has become obvious that the determination of cellular immunity becomes extremely important not only for individuals, but also for the objectification of the condition of the population exposed to the SARS-CoV-2 virus, and all in order to control of the current pandemic. "

On the other hand, adds the professor, the research confirms that measuring the levels of antibodies can not predict the strength and durability of cellular immunity, which has been observed by other scientists.

The researchers analyzed the longevity and effectiveness of cellular immunity in 200 subjects divided into four groups. The first group consisted of respondents who had contracted covid-19, the second group vaccinated, the third those who had been vaccinated and transfused, and the fourth group those who had not been vaccinated and who had not received coronavirus.

The analysis showed that the subjects who did not undergo covid-19 and who were not vaccinated, did not develop cellular immunity, unlike the subjects from the remaining groups.

Cell-mediated immunity measured by interferon gamma-IFNγ has also been shown to provide long-term protection against covidium-19 and up to 20 months after infection and / or vaccination and does not decline over time.

Cell-mediated immunity among those who received covidium-19 did not differ significantly from immunization-acquired immunity, and those who were vaccinated and coronavirus-infected had a statistically significant highest level of cellular immunity.
Research has shown that there is no difference in the levels of cellular immunity in men and women.

The level of cellular immunity was not conditioned by the time elapsed since infection, while antibody levels in subjects who had been exposed to the SARS-CoV-6 virus for more than 2 months were statistically significantly lower than in the group of subjects who had undergone less than 6 months.

The authors note that these data were collected shortly before the appearance of the omicron variant of the coronavirus.
