Croatian expert explains why Facebook fell and when it can return: This is not a hacker attack
- This is not a hacker attack, but a human error with the configuration of the DNS system on Facebook, explains Marko Rakar, communication and IT expert, for jutarnji.hr
More than three hours of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp applications are unavailable to users and it is not known how long it can take. At one point, even the Facebook domain was on sale because they were disconnected from the Internet.
- They mistakenly configured the DNS system so that who.is thinks the Facebook domain is for sale. It remains to be seen what exactly they did to achieve this effect, but there is definitely an error in the DNS system and now they need to go back to the initial settings and propagate it online - says Rakar.
Facebook, he adds, uses tens if not hundreds of thousands of servers in different countries, so it can take hours.
"It will take time for all this to return to the starting position, probably a few hours, I expect the problem could be resolved by midnight," Rakar said.
He reminds that this is not the first such incident and if it is resolved relatively quickly, it will cause a short-term shock, but if it lasts until the morning, it can be problematic for many businesses.
- But I think that will probably not happen. I think we will quickly forget it if it is resolved in a few hours. When such an incident occurs in IT, then after that it is analyzed what exactly happened and whether the action was optimal to solve the problem - says Rakar.
