Thyroid is an important gland at the base of the neck. It produces hormones that are important for many systems in the body, including the thyroid hormones that control metabolism - a process in which the food you take into the body is converted into energy.

If you suffer from thyroid disease, it is because your thyroid gland produces too much or too little of these hormones.

There are several types of thyroid disease, such as hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, thyroiditis and Hashimoto's thyroiditis, and they can all be caused by a variety of things, such as iodine deficiency or even genetics.

Dietitian Molly Humbrie notes that the most common condition in patients is the so-called inactive thyroid gland or hypothyroidism.

Obesity is often the primary side effect of hypothyroidism. "If you notice that you are gaining weight abruptly, especially if it is not in line with your diet and exercise habits, it is important to consult a doctor," she said.

What you eat can have a big impact on the condition of your thyroid gland, and according to Hambry, the worst food you can eat if you have been diagnosed with thyroid problems is one that contains goitrogens.

Goitrogens can be found in broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage, as well as soy and millet. To get rid of the possible negative effects of vegetables, it is recommended to simply heat them.

"Warming eliminates gummerogen activity. "If you eat these vegetables in moderation, it is not a problem, but most dietitians advise you to completely eliminate millet from your diet if you have thyroid problems," she warned.

In a paper published in the British Medical Journal, researchers found that a balanced diet played an important role in tackling thyroid problems.
