The American ambassador to Kosovo, Jeffrey Howenier stated that the United States remains committed to helping the people of Kosovo, despite the "challenging" actions of the government led by Prime Minister Albin Kurti, which, according to him, "reflects on the quality of relations between Kosovo and the United States", reported the MIA correspondent from Pristina .

After today's signing of the agreement for a grant of 34,5 million dollars for Kosovo from the American Agency for International Development USAID, Hovenier, in an address to the media, requested that the Government of Kurti return to the constructive dialogue with the United States and other international partners.

"Many of you have seen the report in the media about the differences between the United States and other members of the international community with the Government of Kosovo regarding some actions taken by the current government of Prime Minister Kurti. We are facing certain challenges with the current government of Kosovo that have affected the quality of our partnership. As the spokesperson of the State Department said earlier, the US government hopes that the Government of Kosovo will return to a close and constructive engagement with the US, EU, NATO and other international partners of Kosovo," Hovenier said.

He noted that, while cooperation in some areas with the current Government of Kosovo remains less positive than hoped, "the commitment of the United States to the people of Kosovo remains as strong and steadfast as ever."

Confirmation of that, said the American ambassador, is the agreement signed today by USAID and the President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani.

The Kurti Government's plans to open the Iber River Bridge to cars, except for pedestrians as it currently is, have been opposed by Hovenier and other ambassadors from the Quinta Group countries, as well as the European Union and NATO's mission in Kosovo, KFOR .

In an interview with Radio Free Europe last week, Hovenier said there is a real risk associated with the opening of the Mitrovica bridge at this time, which could affect the safety of NATO troops, including American ones.

"We believe this risk increases the threat, the possibility of violence and other problems, both for the local community and for NATO troops, including US troops working to ensure peace and security in Kosovo." "We take very seriously any action that could affect the safety and security of American soldiers working in support of Kosovo," said the American ambassador.
