The Iranian Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi, who is serving a prison sentence, has been taken to the hospital for cardiac examinations.

As DPA reported, at the beginning of last week she started a hunger strike because of the bad conditions in Iranian prisons.

Mohammadi was allowed to leave prison today for treatment, according to a message posted on the activist's Instagram account, which is maintained by her relatives abroad. A day earlier, she was once again denied access to a medical facility on the grounds that she did not cover her head with a hijab, which is mandatory in Iran. It is not yet clear whether she will remain in the hospital.

The activist (51), who is among the most famous Iranian human rights defenders, is serving a long sentence in the famous Evin prison in Tehran. This year Mohammadi won the Nobel Peace Prize for "her fight against the restriction of women's rights in Iran and her fight to promote human rights and freedoms for all".
