Entire families in Afghanistan are being forced to sell their kidneys to make money on food, as a growing crisis shakes the country.

One family, including three brothers and two sisters, all decided on kidney removal surgery to sell them for about 1.400 euros per organ and feed their loved ones. Those who have already sold their kidneys are now selling their children to survive, because they have nothing more to sell.

An unidentified couple sold their kidneys to feed their eight children, and are now considering selling one child because they fear the other children will starve to death. "Six months ago, my three-year-old son died of starvation. "I can see everyone dying like that… at least if I sell them, someone will feed them," the 25-year-old mother told Sky News with tears in her face.

Her husband, who has not yet decided which of the eight children to sell, said they had no choice and that the situation was so difficult that he would sell the youngest children for a price lower than that of a kidney. "We no longer have anything to sell. Now we have to sell our children and I am ready to do it for a price of 200 euros. "I can not lie in bed every night and hear them crying because they are hungry," he said.

Since the Taliban took over Afghanistan last August, the economy has been on the brink of collapse and international humanitarian aid has stalled. The effects of this are felt by many families who can no longer afford to buy even basic necessities to survive.

In the village of Herat, on the border with Iran, a dozen women "donated" their kidneys to provide food for children and families. Other villagers sold their kidneys to buyers in Iran to pay off debts.

"We have no choice. "I do this to feed my children," said one mother, pointing to a scar on her stomach from which her kidney had been removed. The village elder begs the families not to sell their children. "I beg the whole world, I beg you not to leave us alone. Stop this tragedy where people are selling their children or parts of their bodies. "Afghanistan needs help," he said.
