Hill: Russia bought oil refinery in Serbia to finance war in Ukraine

Outgoing US Ambassador to Serbia Christopher Hill said tonight that Russia has started using the refinery in Serbia to "finance the war", and stressed that the country "must leave NIS".

"Regarding NIS, there have been concerns for years because Russia bought the only major oil refinery in Serbia. We have been following this for a long time, long before the Russian aggression against Ukraine, and we are concerned that Russia is using energy and energy resources and extracting political benefits from it for itself. This continued after the war in Ukraine began. Therefore, Russia began using the refinery in Serbia to finance the war. "The conclusion was that Russia had to get out of NIS and that is what we are working on now," Hill said on the "Interview" show on Insider TV.

Hill said that the US government was very concerned when this sale took place and that Serbia effectively lost sovereignty over its oil.

"We are concerned that Russia has been able to make huge profits, profits that have not stayed in Serbia, but have gone to Russia, and particularly to the Russian war machine, so we are really trying to reduce Russia's ability to get funding for a war in Ukraine. That's what it's all about," Hill explained.
