Hamas has chosen Khaled Mashal as interim leader

The Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas, which governs the Gaza Strip, has chosen Khaled Mashal as its interim leader, Arab media reported.

According to the sources of Al-Arabiya and Al-Hadad portals, the leaders of the group agreed that Mashal will be the head of Hamas until new elections are held.

Mashal, who was the group's leader from 1996 to 2017 and now lives in Qatar, has been chosen as the movement's interim leader following the assassination of Ismail Haniya. Haniyeh was killed in Tehran on Wednesday, and Hamas and Iran announced retaliation against Israel, which they blame for the attack. The Hamas leader was buried in Qatar on Friday, after a funeral ceremony was held in Tehran a day earlier.
