Hackers have stolen the data of employees of the British Pension Protection Fund

Hacking group Ci0P (Ci0P) obtained employee data of the British Pension Protection Fund using a third-party data transfer service, Bloomberg reported.

The fund manages £39bn of assets from its 295.000 members and protects people with a pension when an employer becomes insolvent.

The Fund said in a statement that the hackers had compromised some employee data, but that the stolen information "was not related to members or retirees."

The Ci0P hacking group claimed responsibility for the attacks on the Fund.

The group is known for using so-called "ransomware" to encrypt its victims' computers so they cannot be accessed, then demanding payment to unlock the files, and threatening to publish the stolen information online. .

Ci0P members are believed to be Russian and are one of the most successful ransom groups in recent years, extorting hundreds of millions of dollars from their victims, according to Bloomberg.
