UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the risk of nuclear confrontation had returned after a decade-long absence, and called on countries with nuclear weapons to pledge not to be the first to use them.
"Any attack on a nuclear power plant is 'suicidal'," warned Guterres, referring to the recent shelling of Ukraine's Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe.
"I hope those attacks will stop." At the same time, I hope that the IAEA will be able to gain access to the headquarters", added the UN Secretary General.
Guterres made the announcement at a press conference in Tokyo after attending a commemorative ceremony on Saturday marking the 77th anniversary of the world's first atomic bombing.
