Guterres invited the leaders of Cyprus to a meeting, but the Turkish Cypriots rejected him
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres extended an invitation to Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulidis and Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar for a trilateral meeting in New York on August 13, KNA reported. Christodoulidis accepted the invitation, and Tatar refused it.
"A few days ago, as a result of our persistent efforts and in cooperation with the Greek government, I was invited by the UN to participate in a trilateral meeting with the UN Secretary General on August 13 in New York with the aim of renewing the negotiations," said Christodoulidis.
However, the leader of the Turkish Cypriots, Ersin Tatar, told the newspaper "Kabrus" that he had not received such an invitation, but even if he had received it, he would not have accepted it because he does not accept the renewal of negotiations without the recognition of "sovereign equality" and without international status for the Turkish Cypriot side.
"No one should expect negotiations to pick up where they left off in Cran Montana (2017). The search for a federal solution ended in Cran Montana. There are no points of contact for resuming talks on the Cyprus issue, Tatar is categorical.
