Greece in Washington: With the delay of negotiations with the EU, the influence of Russia and China is growing
For North Macedonia, as the newest member of NATO, the partnership with the USA, as well as the preservation of security and stability in the Western Balkans, is of top priority. The Western Balkans is a region of strategic importance for NATO, said the Deputy Prime Minister in charge of good governance policies. Slavica Grkovska, in last night's address in Washington, at the panel "How to resist Russian and Chinese influence in the Western Balkans", organized by the international independent Transatlantic Network of Leaders, which ended the working week in the USA, the Government announced.
Grkovska stressed that strong determination and persistence is necessary, regardless of the fact that North Macedonia, like the rest of the countries in the region, is exposed to Russian influence.
"We must not allow political challenges to become security problems," said Deputy Prime Minister Grkovska and added that with the ever-longer delay in the start of accession negotiations, citizens are losing confidence in the policies aimed at fulfilling our most important strategic goal - to be part of the EU. Consequently, the influence of Russia and China is growing as a result of the growing mistrust of the citizens.
In order to reduce and prevent this kind of influence, Deputy Prime Minister Grkovska added, it is important for states to nurture democratic values, to promote and advance the rule of law, equality before the law, as well as to consistently implement the principles of good governance. Finally, the Deputy Prime Minister said that a strong economy in the EU means a stable region. And we cannot achieve that without the support of the United States.
