A mistake drivers often make in winter, and they don't know how bad it is for their car

Winter is a challenge for drivers. Cold, snow, and ice test a car's endurance and its owner's patience. While many resort to various tricks to protect their vehicles, not all tips are equally useful. One of the most common "winter tricks" - raising the wipers - can actually cause more problems than good.

Wiper Lift: An Idea That Seems Practical

At first glance, raising your windshield wipers before a snow or rain storm seems like a good idea. This way, it seems to keep the wipers away from ice and snow, making them easier to use the next morning. However, the problem lies in the fact that wipers are designed to operate in their natural position, supported by the windshield.

When you leave your wipers in the raised position, you expose them to pressure they weren't designed for. Here's what can happen:

Wipers are designed to withstand wind and snow pressure in their flat position. When raised, a strong gust of wind can damage the hardware that holds them in place.

Blade Weakness: Without the support of the glass, the underside of the blade is more susceptible to wear. Although the damage may not be immediately visible, it can manifest itself through poor wiper performance while you are driving.

Unforeseen consequences: A wiper that moves or hits the glass while you are driving can cause additional defects or even damage the windshield.

Better alternatives for protecting your car in winter

Instead of lifting the wipers, there are much safer and more practical ways to protect the windshield and wipers:

Cover the glass: Use a tarp, carpet, or special windshield cover. This simple trick protects both the wipers and the glass from ice and snow.

Do not turn on frozen wipers: when starting the engine, check if the wipers are stuck to the glass. If they are, defrost them first to prevent damage to the mechanism.

Extend the life of your wipers

Wipers are essential for safe driving, and their proper use significantly extends their lifespan:

Regular cleaning: Clean the wipers periodically to remove dirt and ice.
Replace when necessary: Don't wait until your wipers start to leave streaks on the glass. Regular blade replacement ensures maximum functionality.
Adapt your driving to the weather conditions: Do not force the wipers when they are covered with snow or ice.
