The City of Skopje announced measures for polluted air - free public transport, more frequent street washing and intensified inspections

After receiving the notification from the Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning, in accordance with the Law on Ambient Air Quality, the air quality for two days has exceeded the legally prescribed minimum, informs The City of Skopje, and for that purpose, have been declared several first-degree measures.

Warnings and recommendations for reducing air pollution and protecting the health of citizens:

- Free public transport in the buses of JSP and the private carriers.e

- Strengthened inspection of installations under the jurisdiction of the City of Skopje.

- Limitation of construction activities of the facilities under the jurisdiction of the City of Skopje.

- Intensive control of construction sites, ie vehicles leaving construction sites must have washed wheels and be covered with tarpaulins for dust control.

- Frequent machine washing on city streets and boulevards which are under the jurisdiction of the City of Skopje and a recommendation of the Skopje municipalities to do the same on the streets that are under their jurisdiction.

- Strengthened control of holders of approvals for delivery of goods through the Inspectorate of the City of Skopje. At the same time, we call on the Ministry of Interior to conduct intensified controls on legal entities that have approvals for delivery of goods issued by the City of Skopje.

- Appeal to the employees in the City of Skopje, public enterprises and institutions to come to work by public transport buses.

- The mayors of the municipalities in the city of Skopje to intensify inspections over entities that manage waste tires and waste oils.

- The Ministry of Interior to implement restricting the training of driving schools from 9:30 to 14:30 and after 18:00.

- The Ministry of Environment, the State Inspectorate of Environment and the municipalities to carry out intensified controls over the installations under their competence.

- The Ministry of Interior to strengthen the controls of compliance with the ban on the movement of heavy goods vehicles whose final destination is not Skopje and which will be directed to use the Skopje ring road, in accordance with the set traffic signals.

- The Ministry of Interior to perform frequent controls of the exhaust gases of the vehicles that participate in the traffic.

Cancellation / postponement of public gatherings, sports events and cultural outdoor events.

- Recommendation that the construction machinery should not be put into use during traffic jams.

- To use public transport, vehicles to be used only in necessary situations.

- For home heating do not use waste materials, burnt machine oil, varnished and painted wood waste, styrofoam, PET packaging, tires and any synthetic material.

- To be used dry and clean wood without soil impurities and debris.

- Wood stoves to be used and maintained according to the manufacturer's instructions.

- To be cleaned regularly the chimneys.

The City of Skopje informs that the urgent measures and recommendations for reduction of air pollution are in accordance with the Short-Term Action Plan for protection of the ambient air in the City of Skopje, which was adopted by the Council of the City of Skopje.

"These measures will be in force until the pollution is reduced below the alert threshold, ie below 100 micrograms per cubic meter," the statement said.

The City of Skopje appeals to the citizens to respect the given measures and to reduce their movement in the open space only to the necessary exits, small children, pregnant women, chronically ill, elderly people not to go out on the street and not to ventilate the premises where resides. They inform that a set of systemic and concrete measures for dealing with the polluted air have already been started.
