A big drop in the number of tourists in Spain
The number of foreign tourists who visited Spain this August remained well below the 10,12 million in August 2019, before restrictions related to the Covid pandemic hit the industry, but their spending was close to the level of three years ago.
The number of tourists in August increased by 70 percent compared to the same month last year, to 8,82 million, according to the data of the Spanish Statistics Office. Tourists spent 11,26 billion euros, and in August 2019 they spent 11,7 billion euros.
"Tourist consumption is an indicator that measures the success of exiting the pandemic by strengthening the quality of our tourism industry," said Tourism Minister Reyes Maroto.
Spain's tourism-dependent economy experienced one of the deepest economic crises in Europe in 2020 and has not yet reached pre-pandemic levels.
