The German Parliament has adopted a package of measures for economic assistance to citizens
The German parliament has adopted a package of economic aid measures for citizens affected by high inflation, including the introduction of a monthly public transport ticket of just nine euros across the country.
The government will set aside 2,5 billion euros to make up for the loss of carriers' revenues.
The package also includes cuts to petrol and diesel taxes for the quarter, lowering energy taxes to the minimum allowed in the European Union.
The measure aims to reduce prices to pre-crisis levels. However, this is now controversial as prices in Germany have fallen sharply, following initial growth due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The measure for cheaper monthly public transport tickets, proposed by the center-left coalition, aims to encourage as many people as possible not to drive cars and to switch to using greener transport.
Ticket sales across the country start as early as Monday.
The Conservative opposition has criticized the move, arguing that the tickets are a "quick fix" that will make it easier for public transport users at the expense of industry and risk permanent damage to the sector.
