Germany: only "bread, bed and soap" for asylum seekers?

The far-right party Alternative for Germany (AFD) has defined the most important points of the program for the next parliamentary elections in Germany. The focus is on migration – "the mother of all problems".

The caucus of the Alternative for Germany (AFD) in the Bundestag in an extraordinary session before the end of the parliamentary summer break defined the focus of its work in the coming months, in the run-up to the next federal elections, which should be held at the end of September 2025.

Judging by the content of the adopted document, which lists the main positions of the AFD policy, the members of the parliamentary group in the coming period want to concentrate primarily on three areas: the issue of internal security, economic and social policy.

According to the leadership of the AFD parliamentary group, the dominant topic is the issue of migration. The vice-president of the parliamentary group, Tino Hrupala, said in this context that migration is the "mother of all problems". This expression is already familiar to the German public. A few years ago, the then Federal Minister of the Interior, Horst Seehofer, labeled the migration issue as "the mother of all political problems in this country".

That was in 2018. Seehofer (CSU) was then a minister in the government of Angela Merkel (CDU).

"Bread, Bed and Soap"

In the adopted document, the parliamentary group of the AfD again emphasizes its already known positions, and among other things, it demands the turning away of migrants at the German borders, the deportation of persons whose request for asylum has been "rejected", and if "necessary", the placement on border fences. As for persons who do not have valid personal documents with them, no procedure for checking the right to asylum should be opened at all.

In addition, AFD in the adopted document advocates for the reduction of the tax burden, the return of nuclear energy and the extension of the working life of coal-fired power plants. The AfD parliamentary group defends internal combustion engines, ie heating systems (households, etc.) based on oil and gas for heating.

As far as social policy is concerned, members of the AfD caucus demand: "Burgergeld only for Germans" (Burgergeld is social assistance for those people who, based on their own income, cannot provide a dignified life), and for asylum seekers and for refugees only – material benefits, not cash transfers. All this, as AfD says, "according to the principle of "bread, bed and soap".

Weidel mentions the absolute majority

The leader of the AfD and the head of the parliamentary group, Alice Weidel, attacked the so-called traffic light coalition, and in the context of current public opinion surveys, the government of the SPD, the Greens and the FDP called it "minority".

The government must step down, she believes. Weidel accused the CDU/CSU union of copying from the AfD's program in terms of migration policy.

Weidel also defined the AfD's more ambitious goals in the upcoming Brandenburg state elections (September 22.09.2024, XNUMX) and the upcoming federal elections: they are moving in the direction of an "absolute majority," she said. And he added that only with AFD is a "real turnaround on the issue of asylum" possible.

Current and representative opinion polls predict that the AFD will win 27 percent of the vote. As for the ratings at the national, federal level, the AFD currently enjoys the support of 19 percent of voters.
