Germany wants to achieve climate neutrality in 2045
The German economy needs to achieve climate neutrality by 2045 - a proposal by Vice Chancellor and Finance Minister Olaf Scholz and Environment Minister Svenja Schulze will be put to a vote next week.
According to the German media, under the pressure of the upcoming parliamentary elections in the fall and the increase of the Greens' rating, the candidate for chancellor of the Social Democratic Party, Olaf Scholz, surprisingly announced the new climate goals for Germany.
- First we specify the climate goals for 2030. Until then, we must achieve 65 percent neutralization of greenhouse gases. The median goal for 2040 is 88 percent, and the ultimate goal is to achieve climate neutrality by 2045, Scholz said.
Schulze added that "the ruling coalition of Christian Democrats and Social Democrats supports this proposal."
The proposal of the Vice Chancellor and the Minister of Environment comes after the decision of the Constitutional Court, which instructed the Cabinet by the end of next year to determine specific obligations to limit greenhouse gases for the period after 2030.
