Germany produces a quarter of the EU's potatoes
In 2023, 48,3 million tons of potatoes were harvested in the EU, which is a slight increase compared to 2022 when 47,5 million tons were harvested. 36,7 percent less than twenty years earlier. However, there is a long-term decline in the production of harvested potatoes; the production level in 2023 was 27,9 million tons less than in 2000, equivalent to a decrease of 36,7%.

At country level, Germany was the largest producer of potatoes in the EU in 2023 (11,6 million tonnes, 24,0% of the EU total), followed by France (17,9%) and the Netherlands (13,4 %). Together, these three EU countries accounted for the majority (55,4%) of the EU potato harvest in 2023. In 2020, there were 9,1 million farms in the EU, of which one million farms produced potatoes.
In 2020, 25 thousand farms in the EU produced potatoes using organic production methods. This represents only 2,5% of all farms producing potatoes. Austria had the largest share of farms producing organic potatoes (25,6%).
