The Municipality of Ohrid has done everything in its power to fulfill the recommendations of UNESCO and the provisions of the Plan for Management of the World Natural and Cultural Heritage of the Ohrid Region. The serious commitment to fulfill the UNESCO recommendations in the field of coastal planning and management is already visible on the ground. We have shown real will, capacity and readiness to face the problems and start sorting out the inherited catastrophic situations.

This was stated today by the Mayor of Ohrid Konstantin Georgieski regarding the published and confirmed Report of the World Organization for Protection of Natural and Cultural Heritage, which remains the recommendation to put the Ohrid Region on the List of World Cultural and Natural Heritage in Danger.

- Regardless of the decision of the UNESCO World Natural and Cultural Heritage Committee and the outcome of the next session regarding the status of a protected area owned by the Ohrid Region, we continue to work tirelessly for the interests of Ohrid as a cultural and tourist center and to preserve the invaluable wealth for future generations, said Georgieski.

According to him, the final report of UNESCO should be published on June 4, and the report that we had the opportunity to see is the draft version and refers to the period when the Reactive Mission was present until January 2020. He does not expect any major differences in the final report, and whether the region will be placed on the List of Endangered will depend on the Committee of this United Nations.

- Unlike 2019, when UNESCO published the Report, and announced the draft decision to put the region on the list of endangered heritage, now we do not have such a draft decision. We have made significant progress since then, which we will discuss at the UNESCO session. We can interpret that as a small positive signal, but let's not prejudge, we will see soon, said Georgieski.

Yesterday, UNESCO published the Report on the Reactive Monitoring Mission, which is completely identical to the draft version that was submitted to the institutions at the beginning of the year.

The 125-page UNESCO Comprehensive Report reflects the situation on the ground, with all the inconsistencies, omissions, omissions, deviations, mistakes, unfulfilled promises of improvement. The report in the final version is critical, realistic, but above all unfavorable because it recommends that the Ohrid Region be included in the List of endangered world natural and cultural treasures.
