EC Transport Department Director General resigns, used free flights
The Director General of the Department for Transport of the European Commission (Dg Move), Henrik Holloway, will step down after it was revealed he accepted free flights from Qatar Airways while his team negotiated a major aviation deal with the Gulf nation.
He is the subject of an internal investigation into the flights, Brussels' Politico reports, and reports that a Commission spokesman told reporters that Hollolay will move to his new position on April 1.
Holloway informed his colleagues of his departure via email, stating that Friday was his last day at Dg Move.
Politico reported a month ago that Holloway flew Qatar Airways business class nine times between 2015 and 2021, and that six of the free flights took place during the EU-Doha market access agreement, four of which were paid for by the government of Qatar. Qatar or a Qatar-related group.
The revelations sparked a firestorm of criticism, calls for an investigation and calls for a review of the rules.
The commission initially insisted that Holloway had not broken any rules, but later began to tighten those same rules to ensure that such behavior would not be repeated in the future.
