FUEN with a Resolution demands the rights of Macedonians in Albania

Nikola Gjurgaj

The Federal Union of European Nationalities (FUEN), at the 66th Congress held in the German capital Berlin, unanimously adopted a Resolution on the situation of the Macedonian minority in Albania proposed by the Macedonian society "Ilinden" - Tirana, informed the president of the society Nikola Gjurdjaj.

- All 150 delegates, representatives of 103 organizations from 35 countries in Europe, voted for the Resolution. The purpose of the adopted document is the improvement of the rights of the Macedonian national minority in the Republic of Albania and the preservation of the Macedonian identity and culture in the regions of Golo Brdo, Mala Prespa, Gora and Vrbnik inhabited by a purely Macedonian population - said Gjurđaj, who is one of the participants of the congress.

FUEN welcomes the decision of the Assembly of the Republic of Albania "to establish a special parliamentary commission for administrative-territorial reforms in the Republic of Albania" and asks the commission to support the request of the Macedonians for the establishment of separate municipalities Golo Brdo and Gora.

- In the Resolution proposed by us, there is an explanation that in the Golo Brdo area, the administrative units of Trebište and Ostreni have been abolished and annexed to the municipality of Bulqiza by the previous law, while the administrative unit of Steblevo is to the municipality of Librazhd. In the area of Gora, the administrative units, Shishtavec and Zapot are part of the municipality of Kuks. The Golo Brdo and Gora areas are inhabited by the Macedonian national minority and have special characteristics, and with the establishment of the Golo Brdo and Gora municipality, the ethnic, linguistic, cultural and religious identity of the Macedonian national minority in these areas will be protected. At the same time, the economy of the residents will be strengthened and the development of the Golo Brdo and Gora areas will be enabled - points out Gjurđaj.

According to him, FUEN calls on the Government of the Republic of Albania to respect the Law on Minorities, adopted on October 13, 2017 and to adopt regulations provided by this law.

It also calls on the government commissioner for protection against discrimination to work on concrete implementation of all the provisions of the Law on Minorities, and the Government to declare May 21 as the Day of National Minorities in the country.

- FUEN will submit this document to the Government of the Republic of Albania, the head of state, the parliament, the committee for national minorities, the commissioner against discrimination, embassies and international institutions - says Gjurđaj.

The Macedonian Society "Ilinden" - Tirana has been an equal member of FUEN since May 16, 2015, thus becoming the first society of Macedonians outside the home country in Europe, which is part of this association and is a regular participant in Congresses and other activities.
