French producers of spirits in trouble, less and less cognac is drunk!

Sales of French spirits also fell in the first five months of this year, manufacturer data showed, signaling a continuation of a downward trend amid reduced consumer spending in France and globally.

Last year, the volume of exports decreased by 13 percent, to 406 million liters, the association of French alcohol producers announced, reported Poslovni hr. The value of exports decreased by 12 percent, to 4,8 billion euros, according to FFS data. Sales in the US sank by as much as 36 percent, with almost the same percentage drop in revenue.

Cognac shipments have decreased by 21 percent. Cognac makes up as much as 70 percent of French exports of spirits, and the destination of as many as 19,4 percent of shipments was China, according to the manufacturer's data. The sale of spirits on the domestic market has also decreased, for the third year in a row, the association points out, stating that among large retail companies last year it fell by 4,3 percent, to 251 million liters.

As of 2020, it has sunk by 10 percent, they note. The consumption of alcoholic beverages in the French catering sector has decreased by two percent. Prices are rising, so consumers are saving more, explains FFS.

The only bright spot is the consumption of trendy drinks, such as elderberry liqueur, with growth rates of 39 percent.
