German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock today called on Moscow not to escalate the situation with Ukraine, warning that it would face a series of sanctions if tensions escalate further.
- We urgently ask Russia to take steps towards de-escalation. "Any further aggressive behavior or aggression would have serious consequences," Burbock told a joint news conference with US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken.
- This is nothing less than a matter of maintaining peace in Europe. "For us, it is existential," she said.
Blinken said the United States and its European allies would be a united front if Russia continued to act against Ukraine.
According to him, Moscow will receive quick and serious united responses if its forces enter Ukraine.
"In addition, Washington and its partners will take a joint response in the event of sanctions and work on a coordinated response to any destabilizing actions by Russia," Blinken said.
