"Princess Diana's iconic dress by (designer) Viktor Edelstein fetches $604.000, nearly $500.000 over estimate – after a round of fierce bidding at the #SothebysNewYork auction room," it tweeted.

Sotheby's emphasized in a new tweet that the dress "sealed its fate as the most valuable dress ever sold at auction."

Estimated by Sotheby's at between $80.000 and $120.000, the dress was part of a collection of 80 Princess Diana dresses that were auctioned in 1997 for charity.

Edelstein's creation then sold for $24.150 and remained in the same hands until Friday, Sotheby's said, but did not disclose who the new owner was.
