According to the Deputy Governor of Java, 174 people died in severe riots after a football match in the Indonesian province of East Java. Among the dead were two policemen, the Indonesian police said.
After the match between Arema и Persebaya Surabaya, the fans of the losing team rushed onto the field. When the police fired tear gas, a stampede broke out, East Java police chief Niko Afinta told reporters. 34 people died on the field of Kanjuruhan Stadium, all others in hospitals, Afinta reported.
The Kanjuruhan Stadium has a capacity of 42.000 and was sold out, according to officials. According to the police, 3.000 people entered the field.
- We want to point out that not all of them were violent, only about 3.000 of those who went to the field - said the head of the local police.
