The Prague Zoo has announced the birth of an endangered Chinese pangolin, an exotic East Asian animal also known as the pangolin.

A baby mammal weighing only 135 grams is fine one day after birth. According to the director of the zoo, Miroslav Bobek, it is the first cub of its kind in a European zoo. The first days of a newborn's life are considered critical. It is still too early to determine the gender, the zoo said.

Pangolins are threatened with extinction because their meat is eaten as a luxury dish in Asia and their shells are used in traditional Chinese medicine.

The pangolin parents, Run Hou Tang and Guo Bao, arrived in the Czech Republic from Taiwan last April as a result of the partnership between Prague and Taipei. Because of this cooperation, Prague's relations with Beijing, which considers Taiwan part of its territory, have deteriorated.

With more than 1,5 million visitors last year, the Prague Zoo is one of the most visited attractions in the city.
