PHOTO + VIDEO | How Lake Treska was built: Will it ever regain its old glory?
On the 15th anniversary of the catastrophic earthquake in 1978, one of the capital buildings in Skopje was completed - the recreational complex Lake Treska.
Lake Treska is a recreational lake in the village of Saraj, near the capital of Macedonia, Skopje. The lake covers an area of 136.000 m2, is 1,6 to 3 m deep and has a capacity of 10.000 swimmers. The entire sports and recreation complex was built in 1978 with the self-contribution of the residents of Skopje. Due to water pollution, the lake has been closed as a cap facility since 1998.
These days the lake is in the spotlight again, and we will remind you of a beautiful report on the construction of Lake Treska made more than 40 years ago.
"In Skopje, the Roma composed a cheerful song "Skopje, Saraj, Matka, a short relationship". This song was modern at the time when people went on a bicycle trip to Saraj, then an elite picnic area of Skopje…
At that time in Treska, few people bathed because the river was too cold. Vardar was then full of beaches. They started from the inflow of Treska near Bel Bunar, then through Sokolska beach in Gjorce, the famous Debarmaal-Russian beach, Bungur, then Gradska, Officerska, Three bombs…
Today the route Skopje-Saraj-Matka is really short…
And so this beautiful lake grew. With clear blue-green water, with four pools for children around the lake, parking lots, restaurants, kiosks, everything you need for a pleasant bath… ", from these short excerpts one can only hint at what the construction of Lake Treska represented for the people of Skopje.
